Memory is always a curious thing; I'm not sure any of us knows why exactly certain moments stick in our minds while floods of others get lost somewhere in our unconscious. What is most interesting is that some of us wind up basing our lives on those certain moments, the ones that are no more or less important than others expect for the simple fact that we remember.

I arrived at the checkin gate on Friday morning at 10:30 am. Bikers were camping out in line 3 days prior to the rally waiting to get the best camp sites, so the lines were already long. After getting my pass I was about to get in the line when I realized I had to go to the back of the line which was at least a mile long with bikes, campers, semi's, charter buses, cages and campers. Needless to say, I met up with my friend Hugger from the Sons Of God M.C. and got into the campgrounds before the rush as a vendor/media. This way I got to set up RumbleCam Banner is a good location for all too see.

When the gates opened and the trail of bikers came through the gate, women were jumping out of the trucks and running full speed through the campgrounds with a big roll of caution tape, to rope off their crib for the next few days. After setting up camp with the Sons Of God M.C. for the next 3 days, I wandered into the campground too see if anyone needed an extra hand setting up.

Later as campground was starting to fill, I ventured up to the grandstand venue to check out what was being offered for the weekend.

As our society faces many extraordinary challenges, many of us have found ourselves reflecting what we have, what is really valuable and essential, what we hope for, who we are and ultimately, what matters most to us - our Harley's.

In these unprecedented times, we also find ourselves facing financial difficulties and having to make choices to how many rallies we're going to attend this year. As the businesses are cutting corners to save money in this economy; the effect's are also taking a large toll on the vendors at Motorcycle Rallies. With spending down through the consumer, vendors are having a hard time trying to stay afloat with vendor fees and no economy for profit. Everybody looses.

Of the past three biker rallies that I have attended the
attendance has been down drastically to the point of loosing their asses and of course this is due to first time rallies. On the other boot, this time as the head count was down about half, the vendors were shockingly sparse.

The last time I was at this rally was in 1997-1999 and my memories were of a abundance. It was jammed packed, they turned away campers wanting to spend the weekend, they were full! The vendors were endless, row and rows, their was bike parts new and used, helmets, leathers, boots, saddlebags, patches, boot gunk, photos taken on choppers, tons of food vendors, the band stand was in the far left field with very large crowds swinging and swaying to the music, a joint was being passed around, tittie row was like the Mardi Gras in New Orleans 24 hours a day, one didn't get much sleep, it was endless and more than plentiful. There were more bikes than cages, where did they all go.....

So, needless to say their wasn't much to do in between the scheduled of events. All I kept hearing was the party is in the campground but once in the campground, it wasn't there either not like in 1999. Sure everyone was pumping the iron and shooting the shit but alot of the memories were long gone.

Thankfully I had the great pleasure of meeting Ed Stairs, Gary Freel, Parts, Steve Kuszek, Tom and Billy from Easyriders and some of the drag racers. This was were my party was at.

The weatherman lied and said it wasn't to rain until Saturday morning. The skies got black and gusty Friday afternoon with some severe downpours that continue to dampen the fairgrounds on and off the entire weekend. But as usual the party went on.

The first set of races were canceled due to the mud however Saturday brought a fresh dry day at least for awhile. It was a good day to watch the Harley action in competition..

Steve Kuszek took 1st place in Qualifying and 1st place in the finals. This was a first for Steve of Cromwell, Ct.

Half way through the bar stool races, it poured again but not for long. As the bar stool races continued on through the driving rain, the action and the muddy track really got slick making it challenging to win.

The field games always is a favorite of mine watch. "Parts" has been known for years to give the audience what they came for. He built this ol 47 knuck in 1989 and started racing it the next day. He told me he rides it coast to coast and to every hole in the wall race he can find. Watching this big man ride and control his machine around them beer barrels is like watching a Ringling Brothers Circus. This dude can fuckin ride a bike!

His body is laying across the rear fender of the bike, his legs out stretched behind him and his out stretched arms are trying to hold onto the ape hangers as he straddles across his machine through the pits. He later confessed to me that he was not showing off on that one run, he really was chasing to get a hold of the handle bars, his large hands were just not close enough and his body was slipping off the back side of the knuck. You can tell in the pictures I took.

After the field games were over "Parts" rode up to me as I was sitting in the golf cart with Tom and hollers to me "watch this....I'll give ya pictures" and he rides out in the middle of the pits and starts doing donuts in the dirt as the sun had shadows lightening his way. The crowds cheered him on, he clearly is a big part of the attraction at the Easyrider Events. And I too, just adored him.

The event line ups included a  Trophy Girl, Wet T/Shirt contest, Barstool Racing, Rodeo Finals and Bands and a RIDE In Bike show.

To end the weekend, I attended the Christan Motorcycle Assoc service Sunday morning at 10:00 am. Not many came out and showed for this.

The Grand Nationals in Chillicothe, Ohio is held this year on Sept 3-7th. This is the grand finale of all the bikers rallies in the USA. If you have never been to this one, start packin your shit, grab your ol lady, your tent, lot's of batteries or plenty of throw away cameras,{and don't come to me later, asking where you can get all your photo's developed at}, sleeping bags, booze, weed this is one rally that is the most wildest and craziest shit you have ever seen ever!!! Just a heads up, make sure your cell phone is fully charged, including all parties going with you. This place is soooo big, that if you loose one, you just may well.... never see them again until you get home. This happened to me about 10 yrs ago. I threw all my clothes and ect on a backup truck and rode out there. We rode up and down endless rows of bikers and tents, after about two rows your mind can't process anymore searching everyone looks the same, even though you keep trying all weekend, lol. After the rally we found the truck in a gas station fueling up on the way home, I was pissed to say the least. I had to sleep on the ground next to my bike, no blankets, froze my ass off, kept starting the bike to heat the motor and pipes, to give me comfort for a few winks here and there all weekend. Was it worth it...I hear you say... Yessss Chillicothe is always worth going the extra mile for.

Chillicothe's memories will only be yesterdays thoughts.
