The Big One

Sturgis 2008

Okay, so those of you who know me know that I go to Sturgis for the riding and hanging with friends. I really ain't into the Hey Bro shit too much. Crazy partying days are over too. I guess I got most of that worked out of my system in my younger days. I do like to see people having a good time and there was no lack of that in and around Sturgis this year. Far too many bike shows, rides, parties and wet T-shirt contests for one man to endure. Rather than bore you with a bunch of prattling about what a good time we had, I'll just share some photos and comment as we go. I have to thank my sweetheart, Linda, for all her good photos too. She's very good at taking photos from the back as we ride. Oh, and taking pictures of my ugly ass too.

There was not much room at the Rapid City KOA. Tents were everywhere. Still, I have seen it more crowded than this year. Locals said the numbers were down too. Bike made it without even a hiccup.

We gave the ceremonial pink curtains to our friends Steve and Zee. Yeah, they were excited. They do look good with their decorative lights though. Martha Stewart would be proud.

I would have to say that the dominant color this year (other than black) was orange. Saw lots of orange bikes and many people wearing orange. Course I always wear my standard white or gray shirt. Only brought one Rumblenews shirt and wore it the first day. We were in Sturgis on Wednesday. This is usually the least busy day of the rally as many people are riding or in other towns partying. The Sturgis Police don't ever seem too happy during the Rally. Guess it's too busy for them. At least they ride Harleys.

I have never stayed right in Sturgis. It seems to me that you would not get much, if any, sleep. Plenty of people pay good money for the privilege to WALK back to their tent from downtown. I have stayed in Glencoe Campground. It was for the 50th anniversary and it was pretty wild. Good for the younger crowd. See, I really was there.

Why do people do this?

I have seen so many of these types of bikes over the years and I still wonder why. I know there is the "Look at me" factor, but I just don't get it. I remember the guy with the buffalo bike a few years back. Looked real cool. Unless you're a buffalo...

This guy has the right idea. Might need a bit of sunscreen... or alcohol. Of course, drinking on the street in Sturgis results in a hefty fine. Somewhere's around 100-200 bucks if I remember right. Not that I ever got a fine for that.

If there was one of this type of bike, there were hundreds. This guy rode beside us for a while on our way out of Sturgis. He just couldn't stand not racing forward every block or two. I guess if I were younger, I'd be the same way. Of course, I'd have a P-pad on the back....

Lots of trikes this year. Even a few of these backwards ones. I've always kinda liked two wheels or four I guess. Seems like a trike wouldn't work too good in an accident avoidance situation. Rode one once and it felt like it would flip real easily. But it seems like they are gaining in popularity, so what do I know?

Lot's of nice custom work on this trike. I hope nobody is missing the rear end to their 57 chevy.

This was my favorite bike. I would trade mine straight across for this old guy...

Only saw this one wedding while we were in Sturgis. I just wonder who has all the extra change for those two bikes. Or were they rented for the occasion?

Now this is a clean Sporty custom. Old school and just the needed things to be legal. Nice barhopper, but I wouldn't want to ride it very far.

This photo doesn't do justice to the nice paint on this bagger. See through flames with other stuff underneath them.

Okay, I guess this guy needs all this stuff, but a top??? Really, might as well drive a car. Each to his own...

We had a nice ride to Devils Tower and then back through Spearfish Canyon.

There were people climbing when we were there. I used to climb a lot until my body started telling me that I shouldn't anymore. Should have climbed this in my younger days too.

Wow! That was NOT there when I took the photo??

WTF??

Just a goofy tourist photo. Wyoming never really welcomed us, but we liked the Tower.

Some of the falls in Spearfish Canyon. If you ever get to that part of the country, this is a great ride. Might even be nicer when all the bikers are gone.

Out to the Badlands and Wall

Last year we spent a lot of time in Custer State park and the Mt. Rushmore area. This year we spent some time in the Badlands too. It really is cool to have so much diverse landscapes to ride in.

Just checking out the view and getting more sunburned.

She wouldn't get any closer to the edge. Can't blame her. One slip and you'd slide a long way.

Linda had never been to Wall either. I had a hard time getting her away from all the old photos that are displayed in the "Back Porch" area. That wasn't there the last time I was there a few years ago.

I was getting along pretty well with this gal. It took awhile before I realized she was frigid.

They have had a lot of rain in the Black Hills area this summer. I have never seen it so green and lush. This won't mean much to most of you, but they were already on their THIRD cutting of hay.

After a few late nights drinking and BS'ing and a few morning pancakes made by Cowboy Poet and master flipper John Horton at the KOA, we reluctantly headed on the long road home.

Every year we always say, "We should've went here," or "We should've done that."

I guess that's why we always go back...
